A Few Hours in Custer Gallatin National Forest

December 17, 2023

You’ll know by reading the itinerary blog post for Yellowstone National Park, that our first full-day plans in the north were canceled due to torrential rainfall and flooding causing roads to be dismantled.

Our trip spanning Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming was split into two, the north and west.  We had planned to stay near the remote town of Emigrant, Montana since we flew into Bozeman, Montana, and explored the northern part of Yellowstone National Park.  With the sudden closure, we did not get to explore the northern part of the park as planned, however, we instead spent that day hiking in the Gallatin National Forest.

Less than 30 minutes from Emigrant and 17 minutes from Bozeman is Custer Gallatin National Forest where miles and miles of hiking trails and numerous waterfalls are within reach.

With a few hours, we chose to explore 2 waterfalls, the creek, and the surrounding forest and trails.

Palisades Falls

Wanting to ensure we avoid crowds, we headed on a trek in the morning to see Palisades Falls.

The trail to the falls is a short 1 mile out and back, mostly all dirt, some paved, and clear of debris.  It is quite the accessible trail to a waterfall.

After a quick walk, we approached the 80 feet waterfall. The huge 80 feet drop off the volcanic basalt cliff is astounding.  You can also walk right up to the waterfall without getting too soaked!  The walls of the Palisades Mountain reminds me of the post piles at Devils Postpile in Mammoth, California.

After spending some time taking a thousand photos here, we set off for additional random trekking.

Grotto Falls

Next feature on our trek in the Custer Gallatin National Forest is Grotto Falls.   Grotto Falls is one of several waterfalls along the Hyalite Creek leading the way to Hyalite Peak. We only time for 1 and chose Grotto Falls.

Grotto Falls is a 2 and half mile hike out and back from the trailhead.  The trailhead is considered popular since it’s the main trailhead for several waterfall viewing.  This day was not busy and there were only a few other hikers on the trail.

The trail was well maintained and accessible for all.

Once arriving at the waterfall, the clear but very cold water was a calm flow from the drop. The waterfall had broken trunks of trees crossing the falls, however I did not think this hinder any views.  In fact, i think it is what makes this fall unique.

The pool of water at the base was frigid cold, however those daring can take some plunges after-all it was Summer.

Grotto Falls completed our 1st day of trekking in Montana.  An experience to never forget.

You can watch the video on our Day 1 of this trip that covers the Custer Gallatin National Forest here for better quality or below.

Happy Travels.
