If you have traveled from Zephyr Cove to the East Shore, then you have passed through this giant volcanic rock with a tunnel passing through. That is the Cave Rock and yes, you can climb it!
Located in Incline Village, this east shore hiking trail is one not to miss. This easy hiking trail is short with the option to scramble up some rocks to an even more spectacular view of Lake Tahoe. There is a lot of history to this amazing rock. I highly recommend you search up the history as it pertains to the Washoe Tribe. It opens your eyes to the spirituality these beautiful sights offer.
Cave Rock Trail: 0.8 miles out and back. Easy.
Parking
Parking is very limited for this trail like most hiking trails in Lake Tahoe. We arrived around 9 am with no issue finding a parking on a warm Spring day. There were only 2 other cars and not a person on the trail.
Trail
The trail is a well-maintained path consisting of mostly dirt with some gravel. The trail starts at the parking lot and is a short and gradual climb. For the most part, you drove nearly to the top of the cave rock, so the hiking portion is a short .4 mile one way.
You can see the gigantic rock all along the hike. Once you reach the base, right before the scrambling option, you can stop here or proceed to scramble up the rock. The view here is just as amazing, so if you are afraid of hikes or have wobbly legs, this is just as good!
To scramble, just begin anywhere. Some rocks are loose so watch your footing and take your time. Once you reach the summit, the view is beyond spectacular! The height can be quite unnerving so sit, be stable, and watch on! The 360 view from the here is one to hold onto forever.
Additional Information.
On the way back, we found a swing that faced the lake to enjoy!
Hope you try this trail during your next Lake Tahoe trip!
